It is with great sadness that today I have removed the cartoons of the great Bill Leak, cartoonist for The Australian from politicalcartoonsaustralia.com. News Limited lawyers contacted me with a cease and desist letter today, so obviously I am bound to comply – no point letting a 2 hour a week hobby create any sort of trouble with the great publishing house. And the reference is to 1968 legislation! Legislation that is 43 years old!! Don’t get me started!
I am therefore unable to share with you any of Mr Leak’s fine artwork and insightful comment any more.
You can find his work at http://www.theaustralian.com.au/opinion/cartoons/gallery-e6frg6zx-1111119669474
Once again my gratitude is expressed to all the cartoonists who have permitted me or turned a blind eye to me publishing their content. I make no claim of ownership or desire to misuse other peoples material: I just would like to offer more people the chance to enjoy their work. Nevertheless, I had eyes wide open to this risk, and therefore have no qualms in complying.
But Bleak’s work is so good – it will be sorely missed!
I do wonder if the lawyers will chase down every twitterer, pinterest, tumblr, facebooker and blogger that by chance reposts some of their copyrighted material. Sounds like a great use of resources to me!
